Kaddu Kiwe Sebunya

Director of Program for Technical Design, African Wildlife Foundation

Mr Sebunya is a Director of Programs for Technical Design at the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), Washington DC. He has over 15 years experience at the district, national and international levels in development programming, strategic planning, program evaluation, capacity development as well as national policy analysis and development. His specific areas of expertise encompass community mobilization, ecotourism development and policy, relief and emergency refugee interventions, environmental impact assessment, peace mediation and negotiation, fundraising and donor coordination.

At AWF, Mr Sebunya provides leadership in developing AWF strategic partnerships with USA government and private donors and foundations. In addition he provides oversight and support to AWF program in Africa. His line management functions are to monitor and evaluate large regional and country-wide programs for impact and contractual compliance.

He has worked for Conservation International (CI) as Senior Advisor on global policy and strategic planning for Eco-Tourism. This involved strategic planning and analysis, program feasibility assessments and design. Specifically he was instrumental in launching several community-based conservation enterprises in China, Gabon, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, and Madagascar. He reviewed national tourism policies, leading to increased investments, marketing, community participation and benefits. He worked with the field teams in developing program monitoring & evaluation strategies with emphasis on regulating and encouraging private sector investment in community based conservation enterprises.

Over the last 15 years, Kaddu has served in various positions. He was IUCN (The World Conservation Union) Country Program Coordinator. He provided technical leadership in the development and execution of four national parks' management programs in Uganda. He has work with USA Peace Corps as Associate USA Peace Corps Director, Uganda. He was responsible for managing and giving technical assistance to rural development and natural resource and environment program. He has work with OXFAM (UK and Ireland) as Team Leader - Uganda for an integrated support project for over 45,000 Sudanese refugees. He was instrumental in designing innovative approaches for relief and recovery assistance to address the immediate human survival needs and programming strategies that foster long term refugee self-sufficiency.

He has written and co-author papers on 1) Enhancing Human Communities benefits from Biodiversity Conservation: a case for tourism development in Africa; 2) The Rapid Tourism products Assessment Manual for on Site Community Assessment; and, 3) Natural Resource Management Policy.

Mr Sebunya is a native Ugandan, resident in USA. He holds graduate degrees in International Law, Policy and Diplomacy (Tufts University, USA), and Rural Resource and Environmental Policy (Wye College, UK), and B.A. (Hons) Social Development (Makerere University, Uganda).
