TOWN OF BOUCTOUCHE, CANADA

Finalist Destination Stewardship Award 2008

Bouctouche was a typical coastal Maritime village with a diminishing rural economy until two tourism investments began its evolution to the vibrant community it is today. In 1991, Le Pays de la Sagouine brought to life the renowned literary figure "Sagouine" - the creation of a Bouctouche author - giving voice to the unique dialect and culture of 16th century Acadia. In 1996, Bouctouche Bay Eco-Tourism Inc channelled the community's energy and enthusiasm towards saving a rare natural dune system for future generations. Today, Bouctouche is characterised by traditional landmarks, thriving businesses that demonstrate pride and cultural sensitivity, an abundance of green areas and coastal vistas, all crowned by its cultural jewel, Le Pays de la Sagouine, and by the beautifully preserved Dunes de Bouctouche. Bouctouche residents have developed a true understanding of sustainability and the value of community and the name Bouctouche has become synonymous with sustainable tourism development in Canada.
